History

Les Crises is a French-language political blog founded in 2011 by economist Olivier Berruyer. Initially focused on the 2008 financial crisis, the site has since expanded to cover geopolitics, media criticism, international relations, and French politics. According to its About page, the site aims to “broaden the scope of information and reflection” by publishing a mix of translated articles and original commentary. Berruyer stepped down in 2021, and the site is now managed by Jean-Pierre Simon. The site is hosted by OVH, with its listed hosting location in Roubaix, France. Les Crises positions itself as critical of government power and conspiracy theories and describes its editorial goal as offering perspectives that counter mainstream consensus and fringe misinformation.

However, no financial reports or donor information are published, and the legal owner or publisher is not named. As such, funding is partially transparent, but ownership remains undisclosed.

Analysis / Bias

Les Crises is grounded in its critique of neoliberal economic systems, skepticism of NATO and U.S. foreign policy, and focus on human rights. Its content consistently critiques political elites and power structures, including center-left and center-right governments. In a recent article criticizing Justin Trudeau, titled “Trudeau posed as a progressive, but served the interests of big business,” the outlet frames Trudeau as a corporate puppet, arguing that his progressive rhetoric masks policies aligned with elite business interests. TruthOut.org originally published the article.

Similarly, a report on U.S. foreign policy titled “The U.S. considers granting Saudi Arabia a nuclear program” and initially published by Responsible Statecraft presents Washington’s diplomacy as driven by double standards and realpolitik, with little attention to democratic principles.

The site also reposts work from like-minded publications such as Elucid, which recently published a critique of Emmanuel Macron’s European defense ambitions, framing them as unrealistic and elite-driven. These articles are presented without counterpoints or balancing views, reflecting a pattern of one-sided reporting. While Les Crises disclaims the endorsement of all views published, the editorial line consistently reflects a populist-progressive skepticism of Western liberal institutions, corporate power, and U.S.-led international policy.
