History

The Kansas Reflector is an online news website from Kansas. Their about statement reads, “Through its opinion section, Kansas Reflector works to amplify voices of people whose lives are affected by public policies but who might typically be left out of public debate. We seek to increase Kansans’ awareness of how decisions made by elected representatives and other public servants affect our day-to-day lives.”

Funded by / Ownership

According to their about page, the Kansas Reflector is part of States Newsroom, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by grants and a coalition of donors and readers. States Newsroom publishes 28 other publications. The Kansas Reflector is transparent as they link to the States Newsroom donors page. Initially, when they launched, they got fiscal sponsorship from the Hopewell Foundation; however, once the IRS approved their application for 501(c)(3) charity certification, they severed their ties with Hopewell Foundation. There has been criticism of their involvement with the Hopewell Foundation, and they have responded to the criticism here.

The Kansas Reflector publishes original news reporting on politics and policy from Kansas. Coverage focuses on the legislature, the environment, and how national policy affects the people of Kansas. Articles and headlines promote liberal perspectives through moderate, loaded language Keystone Pipeline has history of spills, warnings and fines. Kansas spill is largest yet.
