History
IranWire is an Iran-focused news organization founded in 2013 by Iranian-Canadian journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari. It combines professional Iranian journalists in the diaspora with citizen journalists inside Iran and publishes in Persian, English, Arabic, Kurdish, Azerbaijani, and Spanish. IranWire focuses heavily on politics, human rights, civil society, women’s rights, religious minorities, and government accountability. Its stated mission includes documenting human-rights abuses and filling the accountability gap created by restrictions on independent media in Iran.

IranWire is owned by Off-Centre Productions Limited, a UK-registered company founded by Maziar Bahari, and is a project of the U.S.-based nonprofit Journalism for Change. According to IRS records compiled by ProPublica, Journalism for Change reported approximately $3.4 million in revenue in 2024, entirely from contributions. Federal audit records also show that the nonprofit has spent substantial federal grant funding in multiple years.
Analysis / Bias
IranWire reports from a socially progressive, pro-democracy perspective and is strongly critical of Iran’s conservative Islamic government. Coverage frequently emphasizes executions, political prisoners, women’s rights, minority rights, censorship, government corruption, and opposition activism. This produces a strong anti-Islamic Republic orientation, although this does not always correspond neatly with Western left-right politics.
For example, From Checkpoint Arrest to Death Row: Inside the Flawed Trial of January Protester Mahnaz Chardoli scrutinizes inconsistencies in a Revolutionary Court ruling that imposed death sentences on protesters. Similarly, Women on Death Row in Iran: Single Mothers, Activists and Fitness Trainers focuses on women and protesters facing capital punishment and relies partly on informed sources and legal experts critical of the government.
IranWire generally uses credible sources, including court documents, international organizations, human-rights groups, government statements, experts, and firsthand reporting.
