QUESTIONABLE SOURCE

A questionable source exhibits one or more of the following: extreme bias, consistent promotion of propaganda/conspiracies, poor or no sourcing to credible information, a complete lack of transparency, and/or is fake news. Fake News is the deliberate attempt to publish hoaxes and/or disinformation for profit or influence (Learn More). Sources listed in the Questionable Category may be very untrustworthy and should be fact-checked on a per-article basis. Please note sources on this list are not considered fake news unless specifically written in the reasoning section for that source. See all Questionable sources.

  • Overall, we rate Grokipedia Right Biased and Questionable based on a documented rightward shift on sensitive topics, opaque AI editorial processes, unreliable sourcing, and promotion of some conspiracy and pseudoscientific claims. We rate it Mixed for factual reporting because much of its content is sourced from or derived from reliable material, but recurring hallucinations, unsupported claims, poor citations, and weak oversight of corrections substantially reduce reliability.

History

Grokipedia is an AI-generated online encyclopedia launched on October 27, 2025, by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI. Musk promoted the project as an alternative to Wikipedia that would correct what he described as ideological bias and inaccuracies. Rather than relying primarily on volunteer human editors, Grokipedia uses the Grok large language model to generate, rewrite, and internally “fact-check” encyclopedia entries.

Grokipedia launched with approximately 885,000 articles and expanded to more than six million entries by 2026. Grok initially adapted many articles directly from Wikipedia, while Grok substantially rewrote others. Users cannot directly edit entries but may submit suggested corrections, which the AI system can accept or reject.

In February 2026, xAI became part of SpaceX, and SpaceXAI LLC now operates Grokipedia. Its terms identify SpaceXAI as a Nevada company with its principal place of business in Austin, Texas.

Funded by / Ownership

SpaceXAI LLC owns and operates Grokipedia, which incorporates the former xAI artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk. Grokipedia is part of the broader Grok artificial intelligence ecosystem and does not operate as an independent nonprofit encyclopedia.

Funding comes from SpaceXAI’s commercial operations and investment capital, not from donations by encyclopedia users. Ownership is transparent; however, Grokipedia provides comparatively little transparency regarding the prompts, model instructions, source-selection rules, weighting systems, or other editorial mechanisms that determine how Grok generates and revises individual entries.

Analysis / Bias

Grokipedia shows a right-leaning bias most clearly on politically and culturally sensitive subjects, not across every encyclopedia entry. A 2026 peer-reviewed study published in PNAS compared 17,790 Grokipedia and Wikipedia articles and found that while many were similar, substantially rewritten Grokipedia entries shifted toward right-leaning sources, particularly on religion and history. The study also found that Grokipedia articles were longer while containing fewer references per word.

For example, early versions of Grokipedia’s entries on gender and related social issues emphasized biological definitions and conservative interpretations more strongly than Wikipedia. Its coverage of historical and political topics has likewise given greater prominence to conservative arguments, criticism of progressive scholarship, and perspectives aligned with Musk’s publicly expressed concerns about mainstream media and institutional bias. However, the research does not show that every Grokipedia article is conservative, and many entries remain substantially derived from Wikipedia.

Factual reliability is a bigger concern. A PolitiFact investigation found that when Grokipedia departed from Wikipedia, it sometimes introduced uncited claims, cited sources that did not support the text, removed important context, or relied on low-quality sources. In one example, Grokipedia added a claim about musician Feist’s father dying in 2021 while citing a 2017 Vice article that did not support the statement.

There are also significant pseudoscience concerns. Independent reviews found Grokipedia presenting discredited racial classifications and “race realism” arguments as scientifically credible. One entry cited population-genetics research as supporting biological racial categories, although the study’s author, geneticist Noah Rosenberg, stated that his research does not support those interpretations. Other reporting identified misleading claims involving HIV/AIDS, vaccines, transgender issues, and climate science.

Grokipedia also lacks the transparent editorial oversight available on Wikipedia. Although readers can submit corrections, a 2026 Lawfare investigation found that its correction pipeline stopped processing submissions for several months, leaving more than 13,000 suggestions unresolved. Because Grok both creates and internally “fact-checks” much of the content, errors can persist without independent editorial review.

Failed Fact Checks

  • PolitiFact review of Grokipedia – Found unsupported additions, incorrect or mismatched citations, omitted context, and misleading or opinionated claims.
  • Independent reviews have also documented misinformation and pseudoscientific claims concerning race, HIV/AIDS, vaccines, and other scientific or social topics.

Overall, we rate Grokipedia Right Biased and Questionable based on a documented rightward shift on sensitive topics, opaque AI editorial processes, unreliable sourcing, and promotion of some conspiracy and pseudoscientific claims. We rate it Mixed for factual reporting because much of its content is sourced from or derived from reliable material, but recurring hallucinations, unsupported claims, poor citations, and weak oversight of corrections substantially reduce reliability.
