History
GigaFact is a nonprofit organization based in California that focuses on fact-checking influential claims circulating online. It was initially incubated by Repustar, a benefit corporation that tested its technology and concepts. Since becoming independent, GigaFact has built a network of local, regional, and expert newsrooms that adhere to a standardized methodology for verifying claims and publishing short, credible fact briefs. Its mission is to intercept misinformation on social media while amplifying trusted sources of information.
Chandran Sankaran, GigaFact’s founder and CEO, also founded Repustar and provides strategic direction for the organization. Other members of the leadership team include experts in journalism, technology, and public affairs, such as Robyn Sundlee (Co-founder and Head of Operations) and Roshan Baliga (Chief Technology Officer). The organization collaborates with trusted partners like the Google News Initiative, the Skoll Foundation, and the American Journalism Project.

Analysis / Bias
GigaFact operates with a clear commitment to factual reporting and minimal bias. The organization provides “fact briefs,” which are short, well-sourced summaries addressing specific claims. These briefs are derived from publicly available data and credible sources, often with input from local and expert newsrooms in its network. Examples of verified claims include questions on policy, elections, and viral misinformation.
GigaFact’s collaboration with local newsrooms also allows it to address misinformation at the community level, strengthening its reach and impact while promoting trust in local journalism.
A review of dozens of fact-checks reveals that they fact-check the right and left without discrimination. However, most fact checks are not of a political nature like this: Can bird flu be transmitted to humans through contact with infected birds? In general, Gigafact is a reliable, low-biased fact checker.
Failed Fact Checks
- None in the Last 5 years. They are fact-checkers.
Overall, we rate Gigafact as Least Biased based on minimal editorializing of content. We also rate them High in factual reporting due to evidence-based fact-checking that relies on credible sources. (D. Van Zandt 01/18/2025)
