Fact Check: Was Juan Orlando Hernández ‘Set Up’?

Media Bias Fact Check (MBFC) publishes daily vetted fact checks from verified IFCN-approved sources. Each claim is independently reviewed for accuracy and context.

Claimant: Donald Trump (R)

Claim: Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was “set up” by the Biden administration and prosecuted just because “somebody sells drugs in that country.”

Rating: MOSTLY FALSE

Explanation: Hernández was prosecuted in the U.S. for leading a conspiracy that trafficked more than 400 tons of cocaine into the country, financing his political rise with drug money, shielding traffickers, and taking bribes from cartels such as Sinaloa. His extradition occurred after he left office, and international law allows prosecution of former heads of state for non-official acts like drug trafficking.
