Fact Check: Trump Claims the U.S. Paid “100% of NATO” Costs

Media Bias Fact Check (MBFC) publishes daily vetted fact checks using IFCN-approved sources. Each claim is reviewed for accuracy and context.

Claimant: Donald Trump

Claim: “We paid for, in my opinion, 100% of NATO because they weren’t paying their bills.”

Rating: BLATANT LIE

Explanation: FactCheck.org reports that the United States does not pay anywhere near 100% of NATO’s costs. The U.S. contributes roughly 15% of NATO’s common-funded budgets. While U.S. defense spending exceeds that of most allies, those expenditures are voluntary and not equivalent to paying NATO’s bills. Other NATO members fund their own militaries and contribute to shared budgets based on agreed formulas.
