Fact Check: Does Hep B Shot at Birth Mainly Protect Others?

Media Bias Fact Check (MBFC) publishes daily vetted fact checks from verified IFCN-approved sources. Each claim is independently reviewed for accuracy and context.

Claimant: CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)

Claim: The hepatitis B vaccine at birth mainly protects “other people,” not the infant.

Rating: BLATANT LIE

Explanation: PolitiFact reports infants are the most vulnerable age group: ~90% of infected newborns develop chronic HBV, and about 25% eventually die from HBV-related liver disease or cancer. The universal birth dose is primarily to protect the baby, contrary to ACIP’s claim.
