Fact Check: Did Trump say Iran could “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego?

Media Bias Fact Check (MBFC) publishes daily vetted fact checks from verified IFCN-approved sources. Each claim is independently reviewed for accuracy and context.

Claimant: Social Media

Claim: While speaking about the Iran war on Oct. 5, President Donald Trump said, “They can take out a city. Let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay and it’s going to be over with very soon.”

Rating: TRUE

Explanation: Trump did say those words during an unscripted portion of a political rally in Nebraska. The meaning of the remarks was disputed afterward: critics interpreted him as describing the destruction of the cities as a small price to pay, while the White House said he meant U.S. cities would have been threatened if a nuclear-armed Iran had not been stopped.
