History
The European Correspondent was launched in November 2022 to provide journalism from a pan-European perspective. Based in Europe, the project was started to fill what its founders call a void in continental reporting. Its team includes correspondents across Europe, producing newsletters and daily reporting on political, economic, cultural, and social issues. The site has won recognition, including the European Charlemagne Youth Prize in 2023.
Funded by / Ownership
The outlet is operated independently but is temporarily funded by institutional support. It reports €102,650 in individual donations since 2022, commercial partnerships worth €38,000, and grants from foundations such as the European Cultural Foundation and the JournalismAI Challenge. In June 2025, the European Commission awarded €2.1 million for its TEC:NEXTGEN project, running until May 2027. The site also pursues advertising and commercial partnerships aligned with its stated values.
Analysis / Bias
The European Correspondent is a nonprofit news outlet offering pan-European coverage on politics, economics, and civil society. Its articles, such as “How Europe’s ships pollute and kill when they die”, emphasize environmental and labor concerns with sourcing from NGOs, EU officials, and watchdogs.
Reporting on politics, like “Lessons from the far right”, critiques rising right-wing populism across Europe while presenting expert analysis, suggesting a center-left to progressive editorial orientation.
Social issues are highlighted with data-driven reporting, such as the survey on LGBTIQ violence. Generally, coverage is well-sourced, avoids sensationalism, and focuses on European integration and civil rights. Given its funding, transparency, and methodology, the outlet demonstrates reliability, though reliance on EU grants raises questions of long-term independence.
