History

CableCheck is the fact-checking initiative of the Nigeria-based Cable Newspaper Journalism Foundation (CNJF), a non-profit established in 2016 to advance transparency and accountability. CNJF describes its mission and values on its Who we are and Our mandate pages, and partners with the daily online newspaper TheCable. CableCheck became a verified signatory to the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles in March 2025, per TheCable’s announcement and IFCN’s Poynter profile pages.

Funded by / Ownership

CableCheck is operated by the non-profit CNJF; CNJF reports activities spanning investigative, development, and solutions journalism, policy advocacy, and training, and lists TheCable as a partner outlet. CNJF’s non-profit profile and grant support have also been noted by external funders (e.g., MacArthur Foundation).

Analysis / Bias

CableCheck publishes claim-by-claim fact checks with sourcing notes and a public corrections policy. Recent examples include “FACT CHECK: Images of Alia’s statues at Benue roundabouts AI-generated,” which identifies AI artifacts and seeks official comment, and “MISINFO ALERT: Qatar denies imposing new visa restrictions on Nigerians,” which cites an embassy statement and cross-checks the official Hayya platform.

CNJF’s site also republishes reporting from TheCable, e.g., this migration feature: “Desperate for better life, Nigerian stowaways risk perilous journey in the sea, clarifying the foundation–newspaper relationship. Overall tone and topic selection are nonpartisan, with an emphasis on verification and public-interest claims; the IFCN verification further supports a Least Biased rating and High factual reliability.

Failed Fact Check

  • None in the Last 5 years. They are an IFCN fact checker.

Overall, we rate CableCheck Least Biased based on its nonpartisan, claim-focused coverage and IFCN compliance, and High for factual reporting due to its transparent methods, sourcing, and published corrections policy. (D. Van Zandt 09/15/2025)
