History
Founded in 2014, AkhbarMeter is a media observatory registered in Egypt and Germany that monitors Arabic-language news outlets for accuracy, ethics, and professionalism. The organization aims to combat misinformation and disinformation in Egypt through fact-checking, media monitoring, and public education.
AkhbarMeter is owned by E.Citizen Digital Services, registered under the Egyptian Investment Authority, and affiliated with E.Square, a nonprofit in Germany supported by the European Union. Founder Dr. Haitham Atef has solely funded the project, though in June 2022, it received an $8,000 grant from the African Union’s African Governance Architecture (AGA) and in June 2024 a $25,000 “Benaa” grant from Google, YouTube, and the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). AkhbarMeter is a signatory to the IFCN Code of Principles, as well as a member of the Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN) and Africa Facts Network.

Funded by / Ownership
AkhbarMeter is privately owned by E.Citizen Digital Services and funded primarily by founder Dr. Haitham Atef. It has also received targeted grants from the African Union’s AGA and the Google/YouTube IFCN “Benaa” program for technical and capacity development. They do not accept anonymous or conditional funding.
Analysis / Bias
AkhbarMeter offers original fact-checking and media monitoring, utilizing a published fact-checking methodology to evaluate accuracy, credibility, and human rights considerations. Fact-checks are thorough, citing multiple credible sources and clarifying misinformation. For example, in this fact-check regarding claims that the Israeli ambassador to the UAE was involved in an affair with an Emirati official’s wife, AkhbarMeter debunks the claim by reviewing the original Times of Israel coverage, confirming the evacuation was for security reasons and noting no credible reporting supports the affair allegation.
The site also evaluates Egyptian media content for ethical breaches, as seen in this review of Akhbar Alyoum Gate’s sports coverage of Zamalek football transfers, where AkhbarMeter flags a misleading headline, a lack of source attribution, image rights violations, and the mixing of fact with opinion.
AkhbarMeter maintains an explicit nonpartisan stance, stating independence from political or ideological influence. Its work is generally free from loaded language, with a focus on media accountability and public literacy.
Failed Fact Checks
- AkhbarMeter conducts fact-checks but has no record of failed fact checks from reliable third-party sources.
Overall, we rate AkhbarMeter LEAST BIASED based on its nonpartisan, methodologically rigorous approach to fact-checking and media monitoring, and HIGH for factual reporting due to adherence to IFCN standards and transparent sourcing. (D. Van Zandt 08/09/2025)
