MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 05/08/2026

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

FALSE Claim by Donald Trump (R): “Consumer confidence is way up.”

PolitiFact rating: False (Three traditional metrics on consumer confidence in the U.S. economy show it’s low today, and in at least one case, close to all-time lows.)

President Donald Trump said U.S. consumer confidence is ‘way up.’ Metrics don’t bear that out

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: In 2025, MS NOW host Rachel Maddow said, “Trump is going to ignore Iran until they have a nuclear warhead pointed at us, and then it’s too late.” Then, in 2026, she said, “Trump has no right to strike Iran.”

Snopes.com rating: False (She never said that.)

Did Rachel Maddow criticize Trump for ignoring Iran, then deny his ‘right’ to strike country in 2026?

TRUE Claim via Social Media: A photo authentically shows suspected White House Correspondents’ Association dinner gunman Cole Allen in a selfie he took before the April 25, 2026, shooting.

Snopes rating: True (It is real.)

Selfie shows suspected White House correspondents’ dinner gunman shortly before shooting

TRUE Claim by Scott Bessent and Sean Duffy: Democrats Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg doomed the JetBlue-Spirit Airlines merger, causing Spirit Airlines’ shutdown.

PolitiFact rating: Misleading (Warren and Buttigieg opposed the merger, and the Biden DOJ sued to block it, but a federal judge ruled the merger violated antitrust law. Spirit cited rising fuel prices, lack of funding, and years of financial losses as reasons for shutting down, not solely the failed merger.)

Did Democrats Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg doom the JetBlue, Spirit Airlines merger in 2022?

FALSE (International: Australia): The Australian government has sent $5 million to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

AAP rating: False (The funding is given to UN aid agencies in Lebanon, not Hezbollah.)

Lebanon aid misrepresented as Hezbollah funding

You need to change the heading on the 4th claim from a green true to misleading.
