Fact vs. Fiction: Claim That Trump Is Imposing a 300% Penalty Tax on Landlords

Blatant Lie Fact Check

Claim via Social Media

Viral TikTok and X posts in June 2025 claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump is introducing a “300% penalty tax” on landlords who raise rents excessively. One TikTok video captioned “TRUMP’S 300% PENALTY: THE END OF RENT PROFITEERING?” received over 86,000 likes and 38,000 shares.

Explanation

This claim is false. There is no record of any such policy being proposed, announced, or enacted by the Trump administration. The White House responded directly to Snopes, calling the claim “fake.” Searches of the White House website and official archives found no statements, press releases, or proposed legislation supporting the claim.

The TikTok videos attribute quotes to Trump such as “Housing is not an ATM” and “ordinary people are not crops to be harvested forever.” However, searches across Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Yahoo yielded no credible evidence or media coverage of Trump making those remarks.

There is no evidence—legal, legislative, or rhetorical—to support the claim of a 300% tax targeting landlords.

Conclusion

Fact or Fiction? Fiction. The claim that Trump introduced a 300% penalty tax on landlords is entirely fabricated and has been officially denied by the White House.
