Google’s AI Overviews Draw Fire from News Publishers

News/Media Alliance CEO Danielle Coffey has criticized Google’s integration of AI Mode into its search engine, arguing it strips publishers of traffic and revenue (It does!). Coffey asserts that Google’s AI-generated summaries reduce user engagement with original content and diminish click-through rates. She cited studies showing a 34.5% drop in CTR when AI Overviews appear in search results, with overall referral traffic from Google declining from 50–80% to 20–30%. Coffey also claims Google suppresses affiliate-linked content while monopolizing ad revenues. In contrast, Microsoft Bing has not posed similar issues due to lower traffic volumes.
