MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 01/18/2025 (Weekend Edition)

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

BLATANT
LIE
Claim by Mel Gibson, Joe Rogan: Ivermectin, fenbendazole have been used to cure stage four cancer.

Science Feedback rating: Unsupported (Both ivermectin and fenbendazole have shown anticancer effects in laboratory cells and mice. However, evidence in humans is lacking, and laboratory studies cannot provide sufficient evidence to determine the drugs’ efficacy against cancer in people.)

Mel Gibson makes baseless claim on Joe Rogan’s podcast that dewormers ivermectin and fenbendazole are effective cancer cures

TRUE
Claim via Social Media: Mark Zuckerberg said the corporate world needs more “masculine energy.”

Snopes.com rating: Mostly True (Zuckerberg did not use those exact words but did call for more masculine energy in corporations, saying they are “neutered” and are “trying to get away” from masculine energy, while a culture that “celebrates the aggression” has merits. He also said “you want feminine energy, you want masculine energy,” while adding “you’re gonna have parts of society that have more of one or the other. I think that’s all good.”)

BLATANT
LIE
Claim via Social Media: “So (Los Angeles), Hollywood, and California (get) 100% aid for the next 180 days while Western North Carolina got $750.”

PolitiFact rating: False (The federal response to California wildfires mirrors that of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, with President Biden declaring disasters and increasing federal cost absorption to 100% for emergency work. The $750 payments were initial Serious Needs Assistance for emergency supplies, with additional aid available for both disaster victims.)

Fact-check: Is the federal government treating California and North Carolina disasters differently?

FALSE (International: Philippines): 159 countries have signed up to use a payment system developed by the BRICS member countries that enables cross-border transactions using their national currencies.

Rappler rating: False

FACT CHECK: Post falsely claims 159 countries adopted BRICS Pay system
