MBFC’s Daily Vetted Fact Checks for 05/24/2024

Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers who are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

FALSE Claim via Social Media: Manufacturing EV battery creates same CO2 as driving a gas car for 8 years.

USA Today rating: False (Electric car battery manufacturing does produce CO2 emissions, but there is no set number of years it takes gas engine emissions to match those produced by battery manufacturing. Instead, it depends on a variety of factors such as the battery manufacturing processes, the size of the EV battery and how much the gas car is driven.)

Claim by Steve Bannon: Did FBI plan Donald Trump’s “assassination”?

Newsweek rating: False (There was no “assassination attempt” on Donald Trump by the FBI. The use of “deadly force” as contained in now unsealed search warrant documents is boiler-plate procedural text used by the bureau.)

Fact Check: Did FBI Plan Donald Trump’s ‘Assassination?’

Steve Bannon Rating

FALSE Claim via Social Media: Video shows the city of Chicago raising a Palestinian flag.

USA Today rating: False

Claim by Supplement Salesman Steve Lucchino: N-acetylcysteine inhibits viral replication, breaks up mucus, and is effective against COVID-19

Health Feedback rating: Lacks Context (While some studies of cells growing in dishes in the laboratory show that NAC can reduce viral replication, this isn’t sufficient evidence in the context of a claim promoting NAC supplements as an aid against COVID-19. Simply because a given effect is observed in the laboratory doesn’t mean the same effect will occur in humans.)

Lack of clinical evidence for claim that N-acetylcysteine is effective against COVID-19 and stops viral replication

TRUE Claim via Social Media: A video posted on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Truth Social account in May 2024 included the image of a newspaper subhead with the words “creation of a unified Reich.”

Snopes rating: True

‘Unified Reich’ Reference Contained in Video Posted to Trump’s Truth Social Account?

FALSE (International: Russia): Video shows Vladimir Putin transporting weapons to prepare for nuclear war.

AFP Fact Check rating: False (Military Parade)

Video shows Russia preparing military parade, not ‘mobilisation of nuclear weapons’
