History

Samtiden is a Swedish website established in 2014. The site is connected to the Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna) (SD), a far-right populist party in Sweden known for its anti-immigration stance and critiques of multicultural policies. The editorial direction is social-conservative, and Dick Erixon has served as editor-in-chief since 2016. The site publishes socially conservative and nationalist content, with a focus on anti-immigration and anti-left-wing viewpoints. It often dismisses scientific consensus on issues like climate change.

Funded by / Ownership

Samtiden is owned by the Sweden Democrats (SD) through Blåsippan AB. The website states it is owned by Vainar Mediagroup AB, a Swedish media company established in December 2022. The company’s board includes Nils Jacob Hagnell as chairman and Hans Mikael Staffan Hagnell as deputy member. In June 2023, the Sweden Democrats announced intentions to sell off their media holdings, including Samtiden; however, as of late 2024, no sale has been confirmed. This ownership structure continues to influence Samtiden’s alignment with the party’s far-right ideologies. The publication generates revenue through advertising.

Analysis / Bias

Samtiden has a strong right-leaning and populist bias, often presenting articles that reflect a skeptical view of mainstream and left-leaning positions, especially on climate change and cultural issues. For example, an editorial titled “Människan klarar ett varmare klimat” (“Humans Can Handle a Warmer Climate”) presents arguments downplaying the potential dangers of climate change. The article suggests that warnings about global warming are exaggerated and politically motivated, reflecting an anti-scientific stance that downplays established climate research in favor of a politically driven narrative. The piece lacks scientific evidence, relying instead on speculative arguments not sourced from recognized scientific research.

In another article, “Sápmi åt samerna och Sverige åt svenskarna” (“Sápmi for the Sami and Sweden for the Swedes”), the author explores themes of nationalism and ethnic identity, presenting a controversial viewpoint that argues for ethnic boundaries within Sweden. This stance indicates the site’s alignment with nationalist ideologies and its tendency to publish culturally divisive content that resonates with far-right populist audiences.
