Media Bias Fact Check selects and publishes fact checks from around the world. We only utilize fact-checkers that are either a signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) or have been verified as credible by MBFC. Further, we review each fact check for accuracy before publishing. We fact-check the fact-checkers and let you know their bias. When appropriate, we explain the rating and/or offer our own rating if we disagree with the fact-checker. (D. Van Zandt)

MOSTLY
FALSE
Claim by Kevin McCarthy (R): “Democrats’ new army of 87,000 IRS agents will be coming for you — with 710,000 new audits for Americans who earn less than $75k.”

PolitiFact rating: Mostly False (The Treasury Department says people and small businesses making under $400,000 per year will see no change, while audits of corporations and high net-worth individuals will rise.)

Kevin McCarthy’s mostly false claim about an army of 87,000 IRS agents

FALSE Claim via Social Media: A Florida law allows military veterans’ spouses to receive teaching certificates without bachelor’s degrees.

USA Today rating: False (the law never allowed spouses to receive these certificates, only veterans.)

Fact check: Florida SB 896 doesn’t apply to veterans’ spouses

FALSE
EQUIVALENCY
Claim by Donald Trump (R): “What is the difference between this and Watergate, where operatives broke into the Democrat(ic) National Committee? Here, in reverse, Democrats broke into the home of the 45th President of the United States.”

PolitiFact rating: Big Difference (The burglary of the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex by allies of President Richard Nixon in 1972 was illegal, but the search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home would have received formal approval from a federal judge, and likely involved internal Justice Department review all the way up to the attorney general.)

Trump says Watergate burglary and search of Mar-a-Lago were similar. They’re not

FALSE Claim via Social Media: Mississippi just passed a law allowing all teachers with permits to carry guns on campus

USA Today rating: False (The Mississippi State Board of Education voted to remove language from a policy prohibiting guns on campus in order to comply with a state law from 2011, but each school district can decide whether it allows them.)

Fact check: Districts can allow Mississippi school staff to carry guns

MOSTLY
FALSE
Claim by Ron DeSantis (R): “They are literally chopping off the private parts of young kids.”

PolitiFact rating: Mostly False (We found no examples of “young kids” receiving transition-related surgery. The Florida Department of Health differentiates between children – under 10 –  and adolescents –  between 10 and 18. DeSantis’ office provided PolitiFact with two cases involving adolescents.)

Transition-related surgery limited to teens, not ‘young kids.’ Even then, it’s rare

FALSE (International: Australia): In 2006 World Health Organisation (WHO) members signed away governance in the event of a ‘level four pandemic’.

Australian Associated Press rating: False (The agreement referred to, from 2005, does not give the WHO power to act within a member state.)

Doctor’s WHO conspiracy deserves to be exterminated
