House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal issued a subpoena Friday to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig in order to obtain six years of President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
The move comes a month after Neal formally requested the president’s returns and was later rebuffed by Mnuchin, who oversees the IRS as Treasury Secretary. “While I do not take this step lightly, I believe this action gives us the best opportunity to succeed and obtain the requested material,” Neal said in a statement.
