Gen. James Mattis is leaving as defense secretary two months early amid blowback over his departure. Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick M. Shanahan will replace Mattis on Jan. 1 to serve as the acting secretary of defense, President Donald Trump wrote in a tweet on Sunday.
Mattis announced his resignation on Thursday in a letter that was sharply critical of Trump, saying he was quitting because the president has “the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours.”
