Facebook Journalism Project Announced

On Wednesday 1/11/17 Facebook announced the launch of the “Facebook Journalism Project.”  This project will serve as a way to minimize the spread of fake news, “reduce hoaxes,” and “promote news literacy.”

Facebook reports they “will be collaborating with news organizations to develop products, learning from journalists about ways we can be a better partner, and working with publishers and educators on how we can equip people with the knowledge they need to be informed readers in the digital age,” said Fidji Simo, the projects director.  Simo added the importance of establishing “stronger ties” between Facebook and the news industry in order to combat hoaxes and fake news stories.

Simo continued, that Facebook will develop methods to ‘disrupt the financial incentives for spammers” and will also work closely with third-party fact checking organizations to identify fake news articles.
