BREAKING: E.U. Ambassador Sondland to testify in Trump impeachment inquiry, defying State Department

Attorneys for Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, said Friday that he will comply with a subpoena and testify to House committees leading the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump in defiance of the State Department’s direction not to cooperate.

Sondland, a Trump political appointee, has emerged as a central player in Trump’s bid to persuade Ukraine’s new government to commit publicly to investigate corruption and the president’s political opponents.

    I do not see this as a good harbinger; if he wants to clear himself, Sondland has to take the position that he did what he could to thwart the burgeoning crisis. The State Dept mandate to cull his testimony apparently only relates to documents, not his personal opinion. So, let the battle begin.
