Russian operative Maria Butina pleads guilty to conspiracy

Russian operative Maria Butina, who is accused of infiltrating politically powerful U.S. organizations, including the National Rifle Association, in an effort to push Moscow’s agenda, pleaded guilty Thursday to a conspiracy count.

Butina has agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors and pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the law governing foreign agents operating in the United States. Butina was charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., unconnected to Robert Mueller’s investigation.
