Analysis / Bias

In review, Occupy Independents does not publish original news content, but rather provides a snippet from an article that then links off site to the full article. Curated news stories are typically political in nature and sourced to a wide variety of mainstream sources. Some of the sources utilized are the New York Times, Wired, Washington Examiner, Fox News and Business Insider. An in-depth review of the sources used to indicate that Occupy Independents does not use questionable or conspiracy sources.

Editorially, Occupy Independents does not write opinion content, however, the curated news tends to favor the left with frequent stories concerned about climate change and social justice. When it comes to political candidates they republish news that is negative toward Trump such as this: BLACK AMERICANS DEEPLY PESSIMISTIC ABOUT COUNTRY UNDER TRUMP, WHOM MORE THAN 8 IN 10 DESCRIBE AS ‘A RACIST,’ POST-IPSOS POLL FINDS, and negative toward progressive Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders such as this: AMY KLOBUCHAR JUST DESTROYED BERNIE SANDERS’S ‘PIPE DREAM’ HEALTHCARE PLAN. In general, Occupy Independents avoids extremes and tries to present news with a reasonable balance, however on a whole more stories favor the left.

Overall, we rate Occupy Independents Left-Center Biased based on story selection that moderately favors the left. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting, not because of the news they report, but due to the complete lack of transparency. (D. Van Zandt 1/17/2020)
