Trump administration to offer billions in temporary relief to farmers hurt by trade war


The White House plans to dole out billions of dollars in “temporary relief” to struggling farmers who have been hurt by President Donald Trump’s tariffs and trade war, a senior administration official told NBC News.

The aid, which could be announced as soon as Tuesday, comes just days after members of the Iowa Corn Growers Association met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to express their growing concerns that they will not be able to stay afloat because of the trade war. Republican and Democratic lawmakers have echoed those concerns, and the relief plan drew immediate criticism, with Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., saying, “This trade war is cutting the legs out from under farmers and White House’s ‘plan’ is to spend $12 billion on gold crutches.”

Trump has remained steadfast, tweeting Tuesday, “Tariffs are the greatest!”
