Factual Reporting: HIGH

Notes: The California Republican website does not have an about page or a disclaimer to describe their mission and ownership. However, in small writing at the bottom of the website it states: “Paid for by the Devin Nunes Campaign Committee · FEC ID #C00370056” The California Republican Facebook Page has an about description that reads: “Delivering the best of US, California, and Central Valley news, sports, and analysis. Paid for by the Devin Nunes Campaign Committee.” They also describe themselves as a Media/News company. Many have questioned if it is legal for a Political Action Committee to fund a public website and in fact it is, as long they disclose who is funding it.

Devin Nunes is the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and is also running for re-election in California’s 22 Congressional district. Many left leaning sources as well as Devin Nunes’ Democratic opponent have called this website propaganda or fake news. His challenger Andrew Janz reported to Politico: “He’s got fake memos, fake websites and fake news,” Janz said. “It’s disappointing to see a member of Congress, especially one who chairs an important committee, spread misinformation to his constituents, who he knows will just eat it up.”

Our job is to look at the content of the articles and their sources and base our ratings on objective findings. In review, The California Republican is essentially a news curation source that provides a summary before linking to the full article. All articles favor the right and are typically one sided. The most common sources used are National Review, Washington Times, Washington Examiner and The Federalist. All of these sources are right biased, but have High factual ratings according to our methodology. While stories consistently favor the right, a factual search reveals The California Republican has not failed a fact check. Further, most stories on the website are not about Devin Nunes nor could we find any that he actually wrote. Overall, we rate this source Right Biased based on story selection that always favors the right and High for factual reporting based on using proper right leaning sources. (D. Van Zandt 2/13/2018)
