Republicans in the US Senate today announced that they would be delaying the vote on the senate’s proposed overhaul of the US health system amid fears of revolt in the party ranks.
President Donald Trump has apparently summoned senior Republican senators in an effort to urge them to break the impasse.
Although the Republican Party controls both houses, they have only a slim majority in the senate and with Democrats united in their resistance to the bill, the GOP can’t afford to take the risk of losing votes from within their own party. Many Republicans are critical of the bill with a number of moderates claiming it is far too conservative and high ranking conservative republicans claiming it is too liberal.
One such Republican senator who has publicly denounced the bill is Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada.
Heller told reporters that he could not support a bill “that takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans”
The controversial bill is expected to leave 22 million Americans without access to health care and proposes massive cuts to Medicaid by promising to end the expansion plan by 2021
The proposed bill if passed would be a major overhaul of the US healthcare system, a promise Donald Trump championed on his campaign trail.
