In California, two lawmakers have proposed a bill to combat fake news by teaching high school students how to spot misleading, made up or inaccurate reports.
State Senator Bill Dodd proposed a bill that would create a “media literacy” curriculum. His proposal would provide training in social science courses from first through 12th grades and teach critical thinking, independent research and digital citizenship.
In Los Angeles, Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez proposed a separate but similar bill that will bring “civic reasoning” into student curriculums. Critical thinking skills will be taught in English, science, math and history for grades seven through 12. He said he hoped the bill would help young Californians discern “between news intended to inform and fake news intended to mislead.”
