History

Founded in 1865, The Virginian-Pilot is a daily newspaper based in Norfolk, Virginia. Commonly known as The Pilot, it is Virginia’s largest daily. It serves the five cities of South Hampton Roads and several smaller towns across southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina.

Funded by / Ownership

The Virginian-Pilot is owned by Tribune Publishing, which owns numerous newspapers across the United States. Tribune Publishing is owned by Alden Global Capital LLC; a New York-Based Hedge Fund described as “Vulture Capitalists” by former Denver Post writers for the cuts made to newsrooms. Subscription fees and advertising generate revenue for the paper.
